VATICAN CITY - Pope John Paul II told Canada's new ambassador to the Holy See that the Church opposes gay marriages, which
in his view degrade the true meaning of the holy sacrament.
His speech to Ambassador Donald Smith Saturday read, "The institution of marriage necessarily entails the complementarity
of husbands and wives who participate in God's creative activity through the raising of children."
The pontiff stressed that this union alone ensures the survival of society and any attempt to change the meaning of the
word spouse, creates a "false understanding" of the nature of marriage.
Ontario, British Columbia and Quebec allow gay marriages and the federal government has promised to legalize such marriages.

Catholic Analysis: Since the Pope is the head of the Catholic Church, and the Church's views on the subject of gay marriage
are voiced in this article, there is not much else to say. I guess a Catholic response to this article is "power to the Pope."
Personally, I completely agree with the views represented in this article. Not to be degrating
toward homosexual people in any way, but I do believe that marriage and the raising of children is to be done by a man and
a woman, not by a union of man-man or woman-woman. Heterosexual marriage is the only was to naturally procreate; it is the
way we have reproduced throughout history. Being raised by both parents (were circumstances allow so) is also a natural part
of human life; if gay unions will be raising children, then those children will be at a dissadvantage, having their sexual
feelings confused, and being without an example of the family that exhists naturally. I think that it is a very visible fact
that man and woman are meant to be together, and that is the way marriage should stay.
